Chapter:1 Legacy of Hate: The Conquest of Mexico's Northwest
Summary: This chapeters deals with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the
war and the United States grabbed over half of Mexico's soil. The war proved costly to Mexico
and to Mexicans left behind. According to the treaty, Mexicans who elected to stay in the conquered
territory would become U.S. citizens with all the rights of citizenship. However, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo,
like those signed with the indigenous people of North American, depended on the good faith of the United States and its ability
to keep its word.
